The Nashville Technology Council is giving Nashville-area kids hands-on educational experience in technology innovation through yearly summer camps, and this year The General® is honored to be a camp sponsor.

Back for its third year, the NTC is excited to offer its We Build Tech Summer Camps. There are 16 camps this year, nearly three times as many compared with three years ago when the experience was first offered.

The goal is to provide children between ages eight and 18 with a fun environment to learn to create computer code in a real-world setting, so they see Information Technology as a viable career path. In addition to encouraging creativity and building collaboration skills, these camps instill logical problem-solving techniques.

“Engaging students through our summer code camps is a great way to excite kids, and their parents, about technology,” says Erin Whitaker, Programs & Events Manager for the Nashville Technology Council. “Each year, we look forward to seeing the students’ creativity shine and hope it will encourage students to explore future career opportunities in tech.”

This summer, The General will be sponsoring the Building Web Applications camp, one of the 16 different technology summer camps offered. The General’s investment will provide scholarships for students to attend where they will learn to create a simple web application with Ruby on Rails.

“Providing scholarship dollars for kids to attend the summer camp not only supports area families, it benefits The General in the long run,” says John Hollar, president and chief operating officer.

“The General’s I/T department is instrumental to our success. Those kids who are inspired to pursue a career in technology because of the summer camps may very well be future I/T employees at The General, and we would be proud to have them,” says Hollar.

Last year, of the 200 students that participated, more than 30% were granted scholarships totaling nearly $18,000, and the NTC hopes with support from companies like The General, they can surpass that number this year.
