At The General, we have always been committed to providing our employees with a safe work environment. As a part of our ongoing efforts in diversity and inclusion, as well as our commitment to social justice, we hosted small listening sessions in early June. All employees across the organization were both invited and encouraged to attend. During those sessions, we learned that some team members were facing racist, discriminatory, and derogatory remarks from our customers, claimants, and other third parties.  We are grateful to the employees who were willing to share these experiences because they shed light on an issue that needed to be addressed. We heard them. We knew that action was necessary, so we acted.

We are pleased to announce that The General has implemented an anti-discrimination policy that reaffirms our commitment to providing employees with a safe work environment where all employees are treated with respect and dignity. While we already have a policy in place that protects employees from comments made within our organization, this new policy focuses on protecting employees from comments made by individuals outside of our organization.

The policy states, “The General will not tolerate derogatory comments, discrimination, or racism in any form at any time, including from a customer towards an employee, based upon an individual’s sex, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, sexual orientation or any other legally protected characteristic.  This includes but is not limited to phone calls, texts, emails, or any other form of communication.”

At The General, we have zero tolerance for acts of racism and discrimination of any form.
