Car insurance company celebrates it’s 50th year in business

This year, Permanent General (and associated companies including The General®) celebrates its’ 50th anniversary!  The company was founded in 1963 to specialize in non-standard insurance, and initially developed this specialty in the state of Tennessee.

Today, The General® continues to focus on the non-standard auto insurance market, and we have really honed our craft!  We currently serve 27 states, which make up approximately 80% of the country’s population, and provide over one million auto insurance quotes online a year in addition to those through independent agents, partners and our sales call centers!  We accept most drivers including those that have had a history of driving violations or accidents, have not kept their insurance in force or have less than perfect credit with low down-payments and quality customer service.  Throughout our growth, our commitment to quality service has been consistent; in fact, The General®’s customer service was recently rated “top tier” by MetricNet.

On December 31, 2012, Permanent General was acquired by American Family Insurance.  American Family Insurance has over 80 years of experience selling multiple lines of insurance including auto, home, business, farm/ranch, and life.  The General® will continue to operate independently as we focus on a different market.  You can read more about our new ownership in the announcement article posted here.
