The means and opportunity for interstate and cross-national travel were forever changed by the passage of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 and the resulting construction of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/interstate\/history.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interstate Highway System<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From the vantage of the early 21st century, it is remarkable to think people&#8217;s ability to traverse the country was limited to local, often rural, roadways less than a generation ago. The completion of the IHS and subsequent growth in interstate traffic capacity was a major boon to the automotive industry, and car ownership <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/ohim\/summary95\/mv200.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot up exponentially<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsurprisingly, America is a land of cars, its national infrastructure having been designed to promote a culture of personal vehicles over public transportation. At least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/table?q=car+ownership&amp;tid=ACSST1Y2021.S2504\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 in 10 households<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. have access to at least one car. The country&#8217;s massive geographic size, coupled with the sprawl of rural, suburban, and micropolitan areas, has led to the U.S. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2014-02-04\/9-reasons-the-u-s-ended-up-so-much-more-car-dependent-than-europe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">becoming largely car-dependent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In contrast, many residents in European countries cycle and walk more frequently, largely due to public transit and city design development, as well as the much <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/roadzen.medium.com\/the-real-cost-of-owning-a-car-eu-efa814dde33a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher cost of automobile ownership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relative to that in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, this means America is also a land of car accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/press-releases\/nhtsa-estimates-traffic-deaths-2022-third-quarter#:~:text=The%20National%20Highway%20Traffic%20Safety,the%20same%20time%20in%202021.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31,785 people died in traffic crashes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first nine months of 2022 alone. Statistics include personal, commercial, and publicly owned vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">America encompasses both starkly rural and highly urban areas, and car ownership reflects that. States with large cities, like New York and Illinois, tend to have more robust public transportation systems and the least amount of cars per capita. MnDOT even tasked the public with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MnDOT\/status\/1621539010874167299\/photo\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naming new plows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to raise visibility for snow maintenance. Besides vehicles designed to handle inclement weather, drivers in the land of 10,000 lakes also favor motorcycles; as of 2021, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/api\/datastoredocument\/bibliography\/2225\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 203,000 registered motorcycles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are out on Minnesota roadways.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesotans are also amid a push toward electric vehicles, with Drive Electric MN providing guidance on integrating infrastructure to encourage the use of nondiesel-dependent cars. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics estimated in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bts.dot.gov\/sites\/bts.dot.gov\/files\/states2020\/Delaware.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 state report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that nearly 4 in 5 workers in Delaware get to and from work as single-car drivers, higher than the national average. Many nonhighway roads are under local jurisdictions, and because the state&#8217;s transportation department is not funded to maintain them, they can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmvt.com\/2022\/01\/04\/rural-idaho-roads-struggle-keep-clear-amid-snowstorms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become nearly impassable during inclement weather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, state officials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forconstructionpros.com\/business\/news\/12062995\/idaho-senate-approves-gastax-increase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased the gas tax by 10 cents per gallon as part of a $20 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative to fund road development. License plate registration is another considerable source of revenue for the state&#8217;s transportation department. Alabama<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Total motor vehicles per capita: 1.06<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; Cars per capita: 0.40<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; Trucks per capita: 0.63<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; Motorcycles per capita: 0.02<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alabama recently passed new laws regulating driving in the state, including requiring backseat passengers to wear seat belts (previously, only front-seat drivers were required) and forbidding driving in the left lane of the highway for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2019\/05\/alabama-anti-slow-left-lane-driving-bill-what-does-it-mean-for-drivers.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 1.5 miles at a stretch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2023, the state <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtvm.com\/2023\/01\/13\/alabamas-teen-drivers-license-law-enforcing-new-stricter-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced a new, stricter system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for implementing Taylor&#8217;s Law, which starts monitoring students at just 13 for offenses that could affect their ability to obtain a driver&#8217;s license at 16. Under the new system, being suspended or expelled accrues &#8220;points,&#8221; with enough points delaying eligibility to get a license.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many roads in Alabama experience a high level of truck traffic. Citizens often rely on all-terrain vehicles and air travel to traverse populated areas. The stretches of road that do exist are largely taken up by trucks, as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.alaska.gov\/web\/dcra\/ForestProducts\/HistoricalOverview.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">logging industry is significant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The infamously rough weather in the state\u2014coupled with long, largely empty stretches of highway\u2014poses a high risk to drivers, particularly along isolated roads such as the Dalton Highway and Richardson Highway, which have been plagued by avalanches, limited visibility, and even collisions with moose.
