That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re a participating member of the National Insurance Crime Bureau and help consumers in the fight against fraud. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (1-800 Tel NICB, 1-800-835-6422) has established resources for consumers including auto salvage fraud tips, a disaster fraud pamphlet and access to their FREE online VIN Check Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the NICB, consumers should be wary of flood title cars. Natural disasters bring out dishonest salvage dealers who don\u2019t tell you that the vehicles they\u2019re selling are heavily water-damaged,\u201d said NICB President and CEO Joe Wehrle. He states, \u201cConsumers need to know that these vehicles may appear advertised for sale without any indication that they were affected by the flooding. As always, buyers should be careful when considering a used vehicle purchase in the weeks and months following a disaster like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-flood-title-car\">What is a Flood Title Car?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While thousands of cars are ruined by floods every year, not all of them are escorted straight to the junkyard. Many cars are transported to a different part of the country where a salesperson attempts to sell them under th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e pretense that they\u2019re in good condition.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:264}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A flood title is a vehicle that has been submerged in water to the point that water has enter<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ed the cabin, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">trunk<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> or engine. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Taking on this much water can ruin your car<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, causing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> electronics and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">engine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to give out entirely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Although some people try to fix flood titles, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it\u2019s best to avoid them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">While flood titles might <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">saturate the market after said natural disaster, there are a few different ways to ensu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">re you\u2019re not purchasing one. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here are some things to keep in mind wh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ile <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">shopping for a used car <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">after a flood<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:264}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<b>Check the interior for flood damage.<\/b> Look for water stains, mildew, or sand under the carpet, floor mats, dashboard, and wheel well <span class=\"TextRun SCXW130814374 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130814374 BCX0\">\u2014 <\/span><\/span>where the spare tire is stored. Look for fogging inside the headlights and taillights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<b>Smell the interior of the car.<\/b>&nbsp;A heavy aroma of cleaners and disinfectants could be a sign that someone\u2019s trying to mask a mold or odor problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<b>Feel and listen for problems.<\/b> Have your mechanic inspect the car\u2019s mechanical and electrical components and systems that contain fluids, for water contamination. Notice if anything feels or sounds unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<b>Know the difference between a \u201csalvage title\u201d and a \u201cflood title.\u201d<\/b> A \u201csalvage title\u201d means the car was declared a total loss by an insurance company because of a serious accident or other problem. A \u201cflood title\u201d is a car that sustained damage from sitting in water deep enough to fill the engine compartment. The title status is part of the vehicle&#8217;s history report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;<b>Obtain a vehicle history report.<\/b>&nbsp;The National Insurance Crime Bureau\u2019s (NICB) free database includes flood damage and other information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect a dealer is knowingly selling a flood-damaged car or a salvaged vehicle as a good-condition, used car, contact your auto insurance company, local law enforcement agency, or Attorney General Caldwell\u2019s Consumer Protection Hotline at (800) 351-4889.
